News and Views: 2022–3 Season, Week 10 – 7 February 2023

Results

This was a high–scoring week. The Waters Green Weavers' score of 194 is the second highest so far this season – beaten only by the Waters Green Nags' 199 in Week 1.

Tables

The only change in the A League this week was that the Waters Green Weavers moved above the Nags Head 'B' (who didn't play) into second place behind the Poachers.

The top five teams in the A League table are separated by only two points.

In the B League, the Park Taverners' defeat by the Plough Horntails allowed the Sutton Club to go above them into third.

Individual

Exactly half of the 56 players this week equalled or beat their previous highest scores for the season, and everyone managed to beat their lowest scores. That's 28 personal bests, and no personal worsts!

Top scorer was Ashton Davies with 54. There were also 51s for Alice Walker, Alan Hodgson and Julian Amey, and eight scores in the 40s.

The biggest change in the A League table was that Mark Watson, who didn't play this week and now has a game in hand, slipped down a few places. In the B League, Julian Amey returned to the Top Ten for the first time since Week 5. Julian has only played five games this season, and in Week 6 (when most players had played five games) his total score of 219 would have put him in joint third place in the A League table.

Questions

Most teams found the Park Timers' questions very accessible. According to the spreadsheet they were the easiest we've had since Week 1, when the Nags Head 'B' set the bar very high. The Timers didn't quite manage to beat them in either Entertainment Value or total score, but they came very close. They are in third and fourth place in the Entertainment Value table, and second and third (behind the Nags 'B''s General Knowledge) in the overall table.

At the time of writing, there are no real complaints on the Forum – just a couple of niggles about possible alternative answers. And at the end of the day, the only issue with these questions is that they were maybe just a bit too easy!

The Park Timers' questions scored well all round. They weren't quite able to dislodge the Nags Head 'B''s General Knowledge set from top spot, but they did relegate their Specialists to 6th place. This week's General Knowledge questions currently sit proudly in second place, and the Specialists in third.

On Entertainment Value alone, the Park Timers' questions are in third and fourth place, behind both Nags Head 'B' sets.

Every single team scored more than their average this week. Star performers were the Chester Road Tavern, with 141%.

According to the spreadsheet there was a slight bias towards the teams that went "second first", who averaged 120% compared with 115% for those that went "first first". The bias was more pronounced in the Specialists, where the figures were 121% and 112%, while in the General Knowledge it was 119% to 117%.

On an average team score of 166, the apparent bias may have made a difference of around eight points. The only result that may have been affected was the match between the Poachers and the Dolphin, where the team going "second first" won by ten points.
