News and Views: 2021–2 Season – Week 12 – 15 March 2022

Results and Tables

The Queens secured the A League title with a game to spare, with their victory over the Dolphin. The Poachers will be runners–up – their narrow victory over the Nags Head 'B' puts them six points ahead of the Dolphin but six points behind the Queens, with two games to play. Also in the A League, Waters Green Weavers' victory over the Queen Bs means that they are assured of at least 5th place.

The closest game of all this week was the B League meeting between the Park Taverners and the Plough Horntails, which the Horntails won by 137 points to 135. The Nags Head are now in second place, two points behind Harrington Academicals, with the Taverners third on goal difference and the Dolphin Dragons two points behind them. The winners of next week's game between the Accies and the Taverners will be in a strong position – especially if it's the Accies; but if the Taverners win, and the Nags beat the Waters Green Lemmings, we will have three teams level on 16 points going into the final matches – when the Taverners and the Nags play each other.

The only game in the C League this week resulted in a win for the Sutton Mutton, who moved into second place. They play their final match next week, against the Park Timers; the winners of this will be runners–up to the Sutton Club. (If it's a draw, it goes down to the Timers' final match in Week 14.)

Individual

Alice Walker and Ashton Davies were joint top scorers this week, with a relatively modest 48 each. Top scorer in the B League was Heather Wallace with a personal best of 39, and in the C League three members of the Sutton Mutton team – Wynne Keith–Davies, Mick Graves and Mike Proctor – were joint top scorers with 30 each. This was a personal best for Wynne.

There were nine personal bests altogether this week – three in the A League, four in the B League, and two in the C League. Only five people failed to better their lowest scores of the season, and they were all in the A League. Two of them are in the Top Ten!

According to the spreadsheet, the General Knowledge questions – set by the Park Timers – were a lot easier than average and pretty well balanced. The teams that went "first first" scored, on average, 107% of their average scores for the season; those that went "second first" scored 109%.

The Specialist questions, set by the Dolphin Dragons, seemed to be a lot harder and showed a distinct bias towards the teams that went "first first". These teams scored 92% of their averages, while their opponents scored, on average, only 82%.

Overall, the questions were of exactly average difficulty and quite well balanced. The teams that went "first first" scored 101% of their average scores for the season, on average; those that went "second first" scored 99%.

For Entertainment, the Park Timers' General Knowledge questions just made it into the top third of the table (7th out of 24) and the Dolphin Dragons' Specialists just failed to make it into the top half (13th).

Because this week's questions showed such extremes in the parameters (Specialist hard and poorly balanced, General Knowledge easy and well balanced), the table has seen a bit of a shake–up. The Waters Green Lemmings' General Knowledge questions, from Week 8, are no longer top; they've been replaced by the Specialist questions set by the Harrington Diamonds in Week 5.
