News and Views: 2021–2 Season – Week 4 – 4 January 2022

Results

Most matches this week were won by the teams going "second first". Only the Poachers and Harrington Academicals won going "first first".

Ruston Diamonds scored their first win of the season, beating Waters Green Weavers by 162 points to 148.

The narrowest victory went to the Dolphin Dragons, by just four points over the Nags Head. This was the Nags' first defeat of the season.

Tables

There are still two unbeaten teams in the A League; the Queens remain top of the table, having played one more match than the Poachers – who moved up from fourth to second with a win over the Queen Bs.

The Dolphin Dragons' narrow victory over the previously unbeaten Nags Head was good news for the Park Taverners, who are now the only unbeaten team in the B League and remain top of the table despite not playing this week.

It was "all change" at the top of the C League table, where the Park Timers and Sutton Club both moved ahead of the Sutton Mutton (who didn't play). The Timers are now top by one point, despite having played one game less than the Club.

Individual

We now start recording personal bests, as most teams have played at least three games. There were 17 this week: seven in the A League, and five in each of the B and C Leagues. Three of them were recorded by Rushton Diamonds.

Top scorer was Ashton Davies with a "personal best" 51. There were four scores in the 40s: Alice Walker and Liz Horrocks each scored 45, Haydn Thompson and Ian Grieve 42 each.

Alice took advantage of Alan Hodgson's week on QM duties to replace him at the top of the A League individual table,  and Ashton Davies is also just about within striking distance with a game in hand.

There are now two Dragons at the top of the B League individual table: Dave Barber and Liz Horrocks. Last week's leader Anne Jeater dropped to 4th, her team-mate Malcolm Asquith remaining in 3rd place.

Top scorer in the C League was Simon Rumsey, whose score of 36 took him from 10th place last week up to 2nd in the individual table – behind Chris Butler, who was 5th last week. These two displaced Mike Proctor and Mick Graves, who didn't play this week and dropped to 3rd and 6th respectively.

Both of this week's sets scored average marks for Entertainment and for Difficulty, but for Balance the General Knowledge (set by the Cock Inn) scored very well whilst the Specialists (Park Taverners) scored very poorly.

According to the spreadsheet, the teams going "second first" scored on average 114% of their average Specialist marks, while those going "first first" scored only 97%. For the General Knowledge questions the scores were much closer together: 104% and 103%, respectively.

Overall, the teams going "first first" scored exactly 100% of their average match scores, but those going "second first" scored 108%. On an average match score of 141 this could have made a difference of around 11 points, so any team that went "first first" and lost by that number or fewer may count themselves unlucky.

One team that went "first first" had only three players and were missing their two strongest individuals, and the above figures should be viewed in this light. But if that team had equalled its average match score, the overall figure for the teams that went "first first" would have been 103% – not all that different from the actual one.
