News and Views: 2019–20 Season – Week 16 – 3 March 2020

Results

There was some disruption in the C League this week, as the King's Gambit were unaware that they were supposed to ask the questions as well as setting them. Three of the games were able to go ahead, but by the time the game between the Broken Cross Club and the Pack Horse Bowling Club was ready to start both teams felt that it would have finished too late, so the match was abandoned as a draw. At this stage of the season, we can safely say that this will not affect the sharp end of either the team or individual tables.

This was a genuine error on the part of the King's Gambit, who apologise profusely for any inconvenience caused. This is their first season in the League and they are now fully aware of how the structure works etc. The Committee has decided that this shall be the end of the matter.

Tables

Congratulations to the Nags Head 'B', who have secured the A League title for the second consecutive year – after what was for them a quite lean period of only one win in nine. There will of course be a new name on the trophy due to their change of venue!

The bottom of the A League table is also now decided: the Royal Oak and the British Flag will both be playing in the B League next season.

Of the teams hoping to make the reverse journey, the Nags Head are almost there; but they've played all their games and must wait for other results. Waters Green Rams may well go above them if they win one of their two remaining games, while the Dolphin Dragons are still in with an outside chance of joining one of those two (and it could be either) in the A League next season. And they play the Rams in Week 18!

At the other end of the B League, Waters Green Lemmings must score heavily in their last two matches – and win at least one of them – if they are to avoid joining the Chester Road Tavern in the C League next season.

In the C League, where each of the top four still has two games to play, the Sutton Club and Park Taverners have it in their hands, with the Sutton Mutton best placed to take advantage if they slip up.

Individual

Top scorers this week were Alice Walker, Alan Hodgson and Haydn Thompson – all with 42. Highest score in the B League was 36, for Alasdair Reid and Paul Prior; best in the C League was 33 for Emma Griggs.

There were just four personal bests this week: congratulations to Ian Tams, Lesley Davies, Jim Moores and the aforementioned Emma Griggs. 34 people (out of 72) failed to better their lowest scores of the season.

Ashton Davies still leads the A League table, but Alice Walker is now just one question behind him. Similarly in the C League, Wendy Brown is now only one question behind John Poyser.

In the B League, only an unprecedented couple of scores from either Keith Pointon or Liz Horrocks can deny Dave Partington a fourth title in five years.

The Harrington Academicals' Specialist questions were slightly easier than average, and (according to the spreadsheet) pretty well balanced. They are solidly in mid–table on Entertainment (16th out of 32), and in the overall table they are in a creditable 9th place.

Unfortunately it was a different story for the King's Gambit's General Knowledge set. Most teams, if not all, struggled; only the Weaver came close to their average score for the season (95%). The balance was not too bad, with a slight bias (according to the spreadsheet) towards the teams that went "second first".

Not surprisingly, given the low scoring, the General Knowledge questions were not popular; their Entertainment score  was the lowest of the season so far.

It's too late to change this, but we should take into account the fact that this was the Gambit's first attempt at setting questions for the Quiz League. Hopefully they will benefit from the experience and come back with a more approachable set next season.

Overall (according to the spreadsheet), the questions showed a distinct bias towards the teams that went "second first". On an average team score of 114, the 6% bias might have made a difference of seven points; but there were no games where the margin of victory (either way) was less than this.
