News and Views: 2019–20 Season – Week 1 – 1 October 2019

Results

Every one of this week's nine games was won by the team that went "first first". The Cars & Vans 4U Question Setters' Trophy spreadsheet agrees that the questions were heavily biased in favour of those teams – especially the General Knowledge section. There may however be some mitigation! For more details, please refer to the relevant section below.

There were some very close games – not least at the Queens, where the Dolphin won by just one point. The next closest game was at the Robin Hood, where the home team beat the Harrington Academicals by three points.

Ye Olde Kings Head's debut, at home to the Broken Cross Club, was unfortunately called off as the visitors were unable to field a team. Believing they had a week off (which they did until three or four days before the kick–off), several of the Club's players had made other arrangements. The King's Head were deemed to have won by a walkover and were awarded the points – not a bad start, at the end of the day!

Tables

With three or four teams in each League having played one and won one, and three or four having played one and lost one, the tables this week depend more or less on who scored most (or least) points. The honours in the respective Leagues go to the Nags Head 'B' with 187, Dolphin Dragons with 190, and Sutton Mutton with 154.

Individual

The best score this week was 48, achieved by four players: Dave Partington, Bob Thompson, Alice Walker and Mark Watson. Alan Hodgson and Peter McBride each scored 45, while nine players scored 42. One of the nine was Wynne Keith-Davies, who was the top scorer in the C League.

Also in the C League we have a Top 14 this week, as five players tied for tenth place with 27 points.

Cars & Vans 4U Question Setters' Trophy

The Rushton Diamonds' questions scored well for entertainment; last season, only nine of the 36 sets achieved scores of more than 6.00, and the Specialists' score of 6.67 would have put them in fifth place in the final Entertainment table. As mentioned at the head of this page however, the evidence seems at least on the face of it to suggest that this week's questions were heavily biased in favour of the teams that went "first first".

Not only did all of those nine teams win, but overall they scored 118% of their average scores from last season, while those that went "second first" scored 104%. The difference was especially marked in the General Knowledge questions, where the figures were 122% and 105% respectively. In the Specialist questions, the teams that went first scored on average 110% of their averages, while those that went second scored 103%.

In mitigation it may be worth pointing out that all four relegated teams, who may be expected to score more than last season's averages, went "first first"; on the other hand, two of the promoted teams also went first, while one went second and one (Rushton Diamonds themselves) didn't play. Will the figures look any better after the half–way stage, when only this season's scores will count? Watch this space!
