News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 15 – 5 March 2019

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

In the C League, the Brewers Arms continued their remarkable turnaround in form by winning their third consecutive game – after losing the first eight. This time their victims were the Park Timers.

In the A League, when all eight teams played, the most significant result was the Dolphin's narrow defeat at the hands of the Ox–fford. This was also one of the narrowest victories of the week – the Royal Oak beating the Church House Bollington by the same margin.

In the B League, the Nags Head gained a creditable victory over the British Flag.

Tables

The Ox–fford's victory over the Dolphin opens things up at the top of the A League. The Ox–fford 'C' are slight favourites due to their superior goal difference, but their game against the Dolphin in Week 17 now becomes even more crucial. At the other end of the A League, the Waters Green Rams are now relegated, while the Dolphin Dragons look almost certain to join them in the B League next season.

At the top of the B League, three teams are tied on 16 points; but the Harrington Academicals have a game in hand over the British Flag and the Rushton Diamonds. The Sutton Mutton look all but doomed to relegation, with the other place being between the Park Taverners and the Waters Green Lemmings.

In the C League, the Robin Hood's 11th consecutive victory confirms them as champions. The Park Timers are probably favourites for second place, but with two games in hand, the Sutton Club are the team most likely to benefit if they slip up in their final match.

Individual

No fewer than six players tied for top score this week, with a fairly modest 45. Two players in the B League scored 39, while in the C League, Jim Kennelly's 33 was the only score over 30.

There were just seven personal bests, and 21 people failed to better their lowest scores of the season.

No one will be surprised to see Mark Watson move into top place in the A League table as the other players' lowest scores start to slip out of contention. Wynne Keith–Davies and Graham Wallace moved into the top two places in the B League, and the C League title may well depend on how many of the Robin Hood's last three games Jim Kennelly takes part in.

Neither set of questions scored particularly highly. The Specialist questions, set by the Harrington 'B', are 18th in the Entertainment rankings, and the Waters Green Lemmings' General Knowledge set are fourth from bottom; but overall these positions are almost exactly reversed.

Both sets of questions were slightly harder than average, according to the spreadsheet. In the Specialists, teams scored on average 97% of their averages, and there was a distinct bias in favour of the teams that went second. The General Knowledge scores were lower, relatively speaking, with average scores of 94%; these also showed a bias towards the teams that went "second first" – albeit less pronounced than in the Specialists. Overall, the teams that went "first first" scored only 92% of their averages, while those that went "second first" scored 99%. On an average team score of 140 this would make a difference of about ten points. In fact, only two games this week were won by a margin of less than ten points, and one of those was won by the team that was playing against the apparent bias.
