News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 14 – 26 February 2019

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

There were some very close results this week, but also some resounding victories.

Closest of all was the Weaver's two–point victory over the Ox–fford. In the bottom–of–the–table clash in the C League, the Brewers Arms beat the Pack Horse Bowling Club by four points. By contrast, at the opposite end of the C League, the Robin Hood beat the Park Timers by 71 points. This was the biggest margin this week, closely followed by the Church House Bollington's 66–point victory over the Waters Green Rams.

In the B League, all three games were decided by eight or nine points. The most notable of these results was probably the Plough Horntails' eight–point victory over the league leaders, Harrington Academicals.

Tables

Congratulations to the Robin Hood, who are now assured of promotion back to the B League at the first attempt. One more point will see them confirmed as C League champions.

The Weaver's narrow victory over the Ox–fford opened things up at the top of the A League, where the Ox–fford 'C' returned to the top on goal difference. The Dolphin are now in pole position, one point behind the top two with a game in hand, but as they still have to play both of those top two, anything can happen.

In the B League, the Harrington Academicals returned to the top by just one match point, despite losing to the Plough Horntails – as the British Flag didn't play. At the other end of the table, the Park Taverners moved out of the relegation zone at the expense of their opponents, the Waters Green Lemmings.

Individual

Top scorer this week was Mark Watson yet again, with his second 57 of the season. Batting second for the team that went "second first", the only one that Mark didn't get was his second question: the one about the Plain of Jars. He wasn't alone; nobody got a three–pointer for this one!

At least it was your second question Mark, and not your second last.

Other than Mark, no one else scored over 45. There was one 45 in each League, among whom special mention should be made of Andy Ridgway. This was Andy's second consecutive personal best, a full 12 points (four questions) better than the previous one, and in fact it was his best score ever – an ATPB. It was his first score in the 40s since current records began.

The other two 45s were scored by Ashton Davies and Paul Prior.

Individual scores in general were unremarkable, with only eight personal bests and 15 personal worsts.

Some teams in the C League have now played twelve games, so we are at that stage of the season where the lowest scores start to slip out of contention in the individual tables.

It was very much a game of two halves for the Dolphin's questions.

The General Knowledge were of pretty much average difficulty and very well balanced, according to the spreadsheet. With an Entertainment score that put them solidly mid–table, they sit in a creditable fifth place overall.

Sadly it was a different story for the Specialists. The biggest issue (according to the spreadsheet) was the balance; the teams that went first scored pretty much in accordance with their averages, but those that went second scored only 89% of their averages. This meant that the questions scored zero for Balance and only 2.29 for Difficulty, and with a lower than average score for Entertaiment they are in last but one place in the table.

The questions tended to be more popular in the higher divisions.
