News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 13 – 12 February 2019

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

Congratulations to the Brewers Arms, who scored their first victory of the season – by 145 points to 121 over the Chester Road Tavern. The Pack Horse Bowling Club also won, meaning that the bottom of the C League table is now a bit closer than it was a week ago.

The closest result this week was in the A League, where the Dolphin beat the Weaver by 178 points to 175. There was a good result for the Dolphin Dragons – who have now won four of their last six games, having lost their first four. (Could this be down to a change of personnel at all?)

In the B League's bottom–of–the–table clash, the Park Taverners scored a narrow victory over the Sutton Mutton. But they need more of the same to secure their B League status for next season.

After two or three low–scoring weeks, scores were much more respectable this week. A total of 2,659 points were scored in the nine games – an average of 148 points per team – compared to 2,444 in ten games last week (average 122). On average, teams scored 106% of their average scores for the season.

Tables

In the A League, the Ox–fford and the Dolphin both won their games in hand, moving into first and second place respectively at the expense of the Ox–fford 'C' (who didn't play).

There was a bit of jockeying for position in the B League, where the top three pairs all swapped places. The British Flag are currently top on goal difference, but the Harrington Academicals have a game in hand.

There was no change in the C League, except that (as noted above) the bottom half of the table is now a bit closer than it was a week ago as the bottom two teams both won.

Individual

Top scorer this week was Mark Watson with 51. Close behind with 48s were Peter McBride, Alan Gilday and Graham Bailey. Joint top scorers in the B League were Andrew Wright and Wynne Keith–Davies, each with 42; in the C League, Tim Hayes took the honours with a personal best 36.

There were 23 personal bests this week, and only 7 people failed to better their lowest scores of the season (compared to 4 and 31 respectively last week).

As mentioned at the top of this page, match scores were more respectable this week after two or three low–scoring weeks. The same could be said for the Cars & Vans 4U Trophy scores, where both sets are comfortably in mid–table both for Entertainment and in the overall standings.

Both sets scored in the high fives for Entertainment (an average score) and the Difficulty scores were also very similar – teams scoring on average 109% of their average scores in the Specialists (Harrington Academicals), 104% in the General Knowledge (Cock Inn), and 106% overall.

Both sets, especially the Specialists, were however let down somewhat by their Balance scores. According to the spreadsheet, both showed a marked bias towards the teams that went "second first": 114% compared with 104% in the Specialists, 109% compared with 100% in the General Knowledge, and 111% compared with 101% overall.

On an average team score of 148, this would have made a difference of about 15 points.

Three teams – one in each league – won going "first first": the Dolphin, Nags Head and Sutton Club. Of the six that were won by the team going "second first", three – also one in each league – may have been affected by the bias, if the spreadsheet is to be believed.

It should also be said that the Cock Inn's score of 17.19 is a marked improvement on their score for last season.
