This being Week 9, we are now half way through the 2018–19 season.
There were some good scores this week, and a few close games. Highest score of the week was 190 by the Ox–fford 'C'; this was the highest score of the season so far. (Two scores beat it last season: the Ox–fford scored 194 in Week 6, and the Dolphin scored 196 in Week 12.)
Four games were won by seven points or fewer – two in the A League and two in the C League. Closest of all were the victories of the Dolphin over the Royal Oak and the Chester Road Tavern over the Sutton Club – both of which were by just two points.
At the half–way stage of the season, the Dolphin, Harrington Academicals and the Robin Hood top their respective divisions. The Robin are the only undefeated team, as they have been for a few weeks now. They have a four–point lead over the Chester Road Tavern and the Park Timers; the CRT currently hold the second promotion place by just twelve match points.
In the B League, three teams are two points behind the Academicals and are separated by just 45 match points.
The biggest movers this week were Rushton Diamonds, who led the B League table last week but dropped to fourth on their week as question setters – the three teams that were closest behind them all winning.
Top scorer this week was Haydn Thompson with 51. Five players scored 48, including Andrew Wright – this was the highest individual score of the season so far in the B League.
There were 20 personal bests, and 15 personal worsts.
As we are now half way through the season, the full individual tables are available. Please go to the Home Page and click on one of the links at the top of the Latest Updates menu, on the left hand side of the page. (These links will only be available for a limited time. If they have been removed, please go to the Individual Scores Menu.)
Leading the Individual tables at the half-way point are Alice Walker, Dave Partington and John Green.

As we are at the half–way point of the season, we now discount last season's scores and the comparison is purely between this season's questions. There were one or two sets last season that were significantly easier than any other; consequently the easier questions from this season have benefitted because they are no longer compared with those.
This has had the effect of reversing the top two positions, although as both sets concerned were set by the same team, this is of little consequence! The Ox–fford's General Knowledge questions are now in top place, their Difficulty mark having gone up from 7.48 to 9.22 and the total from 23.89 to 26.06.
In terms of positions in the table, the biggest beneficiaries of the change were the Ox–fford 'C's General Knowledge questions, which move up from ninth place to third.
This week's Specialist questions, set by the Park Timers, were very popular, scoring the third highest Entertainment mark of the season so far – behind only the Ox–fford's two sets from Week 1. This is no less than we've come to expect from the Timers, who have been runners–up in the Cars & Vans 4U stakes in each of the last four seasons. Unfortunately, this season they were slightly let down (according to the spreadsheet) by the balance: teams going first scored on average 108% of their average marks, while those going second scored 117%.
The General Knowledge questions, set by the Rushton Diamonds, were equal 14th on entertainment, and were quite difficult (according to the spreadsheet); on average, teams scored 96% of their average marks. The balance was slightly better than on the Specialists, but the bias worked the other way; the teams going second (first in the Specialists) scored on average 99% of their average marks, while those going first (second in the Specialists) scored only 93%.
The good news is that because the balances in the two sets worked against each other, the overall balance was just about perfect. There was no difference in the "average" percentage between the teams that went "first first" and those that went "second first" – the scores being on average 103% of the average scores, in both cases.
As the overall balance was so good (according to the spreadsheet), it shouldn't have affected any results; but for the record, six games were won by the teams going "second first", and three went the other way. The three that were in the minority were the Dolphin, Nags Head and Robin Hood. Those are the top teams in the A and C Leagues and the second–placed team in the B League, but if we believe the spreadsheet this was just a coincidence.
