News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 3 – 23 October 2018

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

This week we had our first draw of the season, and it came in the Ox–fford derby. The Ox–fford were two points ahead at the break (60 points to 58), but the 'C' recouped the deficit in the General Knowledge questions.

The other two A League games resulted in decisive victories for the Weaver and the Dolphin.

The biggest margin of victory in any league this week was for the Harrington Academicals over the Waters Green Lemmings. The Rushton Diamonds had a comfortable victory over the Park Taverners, while the game between the British Flag and the Sutton Mutton was a lot closer.

In the C League, where all eight teams played, three of the games were fairly close but the biggest win was for the Robin Hood over the Pack Horse Bowling Club.

Tables

Two teams have played three and won three: Harrington Academicals in the B League, and Park Timers in the C League. In the A League, where only two teams have played three games (and those two have won only one game each), the Weaver are ahead of the Dolphin on goal difference.

The A League shows an elegant configuration this week: two teams on four points, two on three, two on two and two on zero!

Individual

Mark Watson is out on his own this week with 51 points. Alice Walker and Alan Hodgson each scored 48, while the highest score outside the A League was 42 each for Jim Kennelly and Jackie Hulme.

Picture Round

It was good to see a picture round this week. This is a rare occurrence these days; I've now been compiling questions for the website for very nearly two years, and I think I'm right in saying that this is only the third picture round we've had in this time. I can't help feeling that now that so many of us are no longer in gainful employment, photocopiers are an increasingly scarce resource! (A picture round means 10 or 20 extra pages per game, compared to about 16 in total if there is no picture round – and these can be done double–sided to save paper.)

Well done to the Plough Horntails for making the extra effort – especially in providing an alternative (verbal) question for each picture, to cater for visually impaired contestants, as opposed to the two that are called for. For future reference, however, the following points are offered as ways in which it could have been made even better:

Standard practice is to provide two copies of each picture – one for each team. Of course this means more photocopying (see above), but it makes it so much easier if each team can be handed one picture
Ideally, the pictures would be numbered. This would make it a lot easier for the question master to keep track of where he or she was up to

There were ten games this week. Four were won by the teams that went "first first", and five went the other way; there was also one draw.

This suggests a very even balance, and the spreadsheet bears this out. The questions were also of pretty much average difficulty – and in this context, average is fine (not too hard, and certainly not too easy). On average, teams going "first first" scored 102% of their average scores (98% in the Specialist and 104% in the General Knowledge), while those going "second first" scored exactly 100% (96% in the Specialist and 103% in the General Knowledge).

The Entertainment scores were the lowest so far this season, but still perfectly respectable. The Plough Horntails' total marks would have put both of their sets in the top ten last season.
