Many will regard the first result on the list as the biggest surprise this week: the Weaver beating the Ox–fford 'C' by 179 points to 172. Especially as the Weaver were without their captain, Graham Bailey (League Publicity and Prizes officer), who was unfortunately hospitalised a few days earlier. Graham is now back at home and just needs to take it easy for a few weeks. Whether this will further restrict his Quiz League participation remains to be seen ... needless to say we wish him a speedy recovery.
The closest game of the night was in the C League, where Chester Road Tavern beat the Cock Inn by 146 points to 143.
Four of this week's matches were won by the teams going "first first", and five went the other way.
Congratulations to the Weaver, Harrington Academicals and Sutton Club, who each realised the highest scores in their respective leagues and so head the tables after the first round of matches.
Highest scorer of the week was Phil Davies of the British Flag, with 48. Phil went first on the team going "second first"; his General Knowledge questions were 1, 9, 17, etc.
There were six scores of 45 in the A League, and two in the B League. Highest scorer in the C League was Jim Moores of the Chester Road Tavern with 39.
There were seven scores of 27 in the C League, and nine of 30 or more – resulting in there being 16 people in this week's Top Ten!
Bill Cawley, of the Royal Oak quiz team, has reached the semi–final stage in BBC Radio 4's music quiz Counterpoint. Bill's semi–final will be broadcast on Monday 22 October at 3 p.m., repeated on Saturday night (27 October) at 11 p.m. His opponents will be Charles Dusting, a retired accountant from Worcestershire, and Alan Harrison, a retired metallurgist from Sheffield. Alan won his heat with an impressive 29 – the highest score in any of the heats.
Counterpoint bills itself as "The general knowledge music quiz". It covers classical, jazz, pop, musicals, and all other forms of music. It has been presented by Paul Gambaccini since 2008 (previously Ned Sherrin).
Bill said "I have always enjoyed a wide range of music and seen many composers and musicians through my life from Rod Stewart to Dmitri Shostakovich. I hope to do Leek proud on a national programme which has an audience of 4 million listeners."
Never mind Leek – we hope Bill will do MQL proud!
If anyone else is looking for a media showcase, Shauna Barstow from the Park Taverners has sent us the following (I believe it's what is known as a 'tweet'). For more details, click on the date and time:

The Ox–fford's questions scored well all round. Last season there were only three scores over 24, including 25.69 for the Ox–fford's winning Specialist set, but the second and third best scores (by the Park Timers and the British Flag) would also have beaten the higher of this week's scores. The gauntlet has been laid down!
